The annual event was started in 1994 to honor Wooden, the most celebrated coach in college basketball history. Known as the Wizard of Westwood, Wooden built a dynasty at UCLA.

Auburn's opponent, Stanford, is currently ranked sixth nationally. The Tigers and Cardinal have never met in men's basketball. Stanford is expected to return one of the top players in Pac-10 Conference, Mark Madsen. Stanford coach Mike Montgomery says, "John Wooden is someone that I highly admire and to be part of this tournament is a great experience for me and the team. The event has the feel of the NCAA Tournament, the organization is superb and the people involved run a first class event."

Auburn Coach Cliff Ellis says, "This is a high profile early season event bringing together three of the top six teams in college basketball. We are thrilled to be invited."
