We've just about reached the end of the regular season, so the bowl picture
should be pretty clear, right? Wrong. While the SEC representatives aren't
that hard to determine, exactly where each team will wind up is still a
long way from being settled.
| Let's look at each team's possibilities: Florida - If the Gators beat FSU, then win the SEC Championship game in Atlanta, they will play for the National Championship in the Sugar Bowl. That seemed a foregone conclusion just a few weeks ago, but injuries to the Florida offensive line have made the Gators appear beatable. If Florida loses one of their last two games, they should still be in the Alliance picture. If they lose both, the Gators would probably be making the short trip to Orlando for the Citrus Bowl. Tennessee - The Vols may get back in the Alliance despite their loss a couple of weeks ago to Memphis. They are ranked in the Top 10, and should move ahead of the Colorado-Nebraska loser if they win easily over Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Tennessee still has to worry that the Alliance will take lower-ranked Notre Dame or Penn State, though. If Tennessee is not in one of the Big Three bowls, they would be the favorite for the Citrus Bowl, UNLESS Florida gets knocked off twice. That would drop the Vols to the Outback Bowl in Tampa. LSU - If Alabama beats Auburn to win the SEC West and then falls to Florida in the SEC Championship Game, the Bayou Bengals would most likely wind up at the Outback Bowl. If Tennessee makes the Bowl Alliance. If the Vols go to Orlando, LSU probably would be headed to Atlanta for the Peach Bowl, with Alabama in the Outback. However, the Tigers could still win the SEC West with an Auburn win over Alabama and a win themselves over Arkansas. If that happens, LSU could get into the Alliance with a win over Florida as the SEC Champion. Just getting to the SEC title game and not being embarrassed could land them in the Citrus Bowl, if Tennessee makes the Alliance. However, they could still wind up in Shreveport if they lose again in the regular season. Alabama - The Tide wins the SEC West with a win over Auburn, giving them their turn against Florida and a chance to make the Alliance with a win. If they lose to the Gators, Alabama would probably be making plans for a Florida holiday in either Orlando or Tampa, depending on whether Tennessee is in the Alliance bowls or not. A loss to Auburn could knock the Tide back to Atlanta or even Shreveport. Auburn - The Tigers still have a chance to win the SEC West title. A win over Alabama coupled with an LSU loss to Arkansas would put them in the SEC Championship game. Keep in mind that the winner of that game is THE SEC Champion and gets a berth in one of the Alliance Bowls. So, it's a longshot, but a possibility for Auburn. Just getting to the SEC title game and playing respectably could boost the Tigers' bowl outlook greatly. In that scenario, Auburn would be 8-4, while Alabama and LSU would be 8-3. Any of the three could wind up anywhere from Orlando (depending on UT's whereabouts) to Tampa to Atlanta to Shreveport. A loss to Alabama probably makes the Tigers most likely headed to the Weedeater Independence Bowl, with the Peach a possibility if Tennessee makes the Alliance picture. However, a one-sided loss to Alabama could knock the Tigers out of the bowl picture completely, if either Georgia or South Carolina win out to finish 6-5. Hey, that was simple, wasn't it? You might want to wait just a few days before you make your holiday reservations. |
