INSIDE THE AUBURN TIGERS
SEC Notes
Bulldog Freshman A Tiger On the Course
Remember the name Reilley Rankin. Before she finishes her college career at
Georgia, she may be considered the top women's golfer in SEC history based
on her sensational first season. She is off to a better start as a college
freshman than the now legendary Tiger Woods was when he was a freshman at
Stanford.
Georgia golf phenom Reilly Rankin
As Georgia prepares for the NCAA Championship May 20-23 at the University
of Wisconsin, she will be one of the favorites to win the individual title.
She is just the second player in conference history to win both the SEC
Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year awards while also winning the
league individual title. She led Georgia to the league team championship
and last weekend she fired rounds of 70-75-71 to win the individual title
at the NCAA East Regional in Durham, N.C. Georgia finished eight shots
ahead of second place Duke, which was playing on its own campus course.
Rankin, whose legend grows around the South the more she plays, is known
for her exceptionally long drives and irons. At the SEC Championships, she
got home from 137 yards out on a par three with a pitching wedge. In
another college tournament, she drove the green on a 330-yard par four.
Rankin, who has won her last four tournaments, is the SEC's leading hope
for an individual crown at the nationals which will also feature teams from
Auburn, Florida and LSU. Auburn is led by senior Katie Gallina and junior
Robin Cook. Sophomore Kami Smith had her best tournament at the NCAA East
Regional and if she continues to play well, the Tigers could be a Top 10
finisher in Wisconsin.
In other news
If the weather doesn't turn nasty, this year's SEC Baseball Tournament at
the Hoover Met outside of Birmingham is expected to be the most heavily
attended in conference history. A first round Auburn vs. Alabama showdown
crowd of 14,390 gave ticket sales a big push.
Florida's leading returning receiver in football, senior Travis McGriff,
missed most of spring practice with an ankle injury, but he should be 100
percent for the fall.
The Georgia women's gymnastics team posted a 35-0 competition record on
the way to the program's fourth national title. Fans in Athens warmed to
the Gym Dogs, who drew a school record 8,944 fans per home meet.
Quarterback Tim Couch hasn't lost his passing touch at Kentucky. The
junior completed 14-20 for 316 yards and four quarters in UK's annual
spring football game.
