AU Season Off to Flying Stop

"The plan didn't work."

Terry Bowden's plan to rebuild a running attack took a nose-dive Thursday night as the Auburn offense mananged to produce only 18 yards in rushing, and zero points in an incommodious 19-0 loss to the Virginia Cavaliers. The game was the first season-opening shutout for Auburn in the 50-year history of Jordan-Hare Stadium.

    Four TO's Seal Auburn's Fate

Before Ben Leard took his third snap, he trailed 13-0. An interception return for a touchdown on the first offensive play was followed by fumble at the 26-yard line, digging a hole for the homestanding Tigers that they never escaped. Leard & Co. fought back, closing the gap to 19-17 at the half, but the Bayou Bengals tossed a shutout in the second period and Senior LSU QB Herb Tyler was flawless.

    Red Zone Anemia Grounds Tigers

Defending SEC Champions Tennessee held Auburn out of the endzone for 60 minutes Saturday afternoon as the 1-3 Tigers were held to three field goals in a 17-9 loss. Injuries forced Auburn to resort to true freshmen at center, quarterback and running back. Despite the injuries and Tennessee sinking Auburn to a 17-0 decifit in the first quarter, the Tigers missed a chance at overtime when a Gabe Gross touchdown pass was deflected as time ran out.

    Suddenly, Lost Season

Auburn looked like a team that could win-out and preserve a winning record and bowl trip until the momentum swung Arkansas' way on a botched fourth-and-one attempt. Five plays later the Hogs scored to take the lead and it was all over. Auburn fought bravely for the lost cause in the 24-21 loss, but in vain.

    Homecoming Heroics

With 57 ticks left on the scoreboard clock at Jordan-Hare stadium, the Tiger offense did the only thing that the defense hadn't done-- score with the football. Again and again the Tiger defense had turned away superstar Daunte Culpepper and the nation's most potent offense. And finally, as time ran out, Freshman Gabe Gross connected with Senior Karsten Bailey for the winning score as Auburn downed Central Florida, 10-6, on a homecoming Saturday.
